Ephesians 5:25-33 [New King James Version]

25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her, 26 that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word, 27 that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish. 28 So husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies; he who loves his wife loves himself. 29 For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as the Lord does the church. 30 For we are members of His body, of His flesh and of His bones. 31 “For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” 32 This is a great mystery, but I speak concerning Christ and the church. 33 Nevertheless let each one of you in particular so love his own wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.

  • Husbands are to love their wives as Christ loved the church
    • Husbands are commanded to love their wives
    • Many preachers teach that wives are never commanded to love their husbands = not true!
      • Husbands are to love (agape’) their wives
        • A choice love (sacrifice, charity, fidelity)
        • Husbands are to always cherish wives
      • Titus 2:3-5 older women are to teach wives how to love (phileo; have affection for) their husbands (show respect, honor, be tender toward, cherish)
    • Christ is example of how to love wives as he loved church
      • Gave himself (on behalf of) for the church
      • Sanctified (set apart) the church (the husband is to set apart his wife for exclusive relationship)
      • Washed the church clean (Titus 3:5)
        • Psalm 51:7 David asked God to cleanse him
        • Mark 16:1-8 baptism is a symbol of being cleansed by blood of Christ (1 Peter 3:20-21-not with physical water = symbolic)
      • Via the Word (Gospel = Romans 10:17)
      • Christ will purify his bride of all sin (Romans 8:30)
    • The husband = given a high standard to follow (Christ)
  • The buck stops at the groom
    • Adam and Abraham were help responsible to decisions made by their wives (Numbers 30:13 a man could or nullify a vow made by his wife)
    • The husband is to treat his wife as Christ did the church
      • Protector and rescuer (covers his wife with safety)
      • Unconditionally loves his wife
        • Age, changing appearance, marital conflicts, desires, or any other aspect is not to alter or diminish a man’s love for his wife
        • Malachi. 2:14-15 a man is to treat his wife with as much respect, affection, and care as when he first fell in love with her
      • Nourishes his wife as he does his own body
        • Every normal man takes care of his body
        • Nourish = to take care of until maturity is reached (glorification) –used of rearing children, raising plants or animals
        • Cherish = treat something as precious, honored, important, and delicate (caring)
    • Just as all believers are members of one body, the wife is tied to the husband so they become one flesh (Genesis 2)
      • Paul quotes Genesis 2:25 = God commands that when a man leaves his parents he clings to wife
      • Choice love demands undying cherishing of wife
  • The final admonition
    • To love one’s wife as one’s self transcends desire, temptation, and feelings (continue to show love to wife)
      • Men are visual, so are tempted by beauty
      • Men are to resist all enticement and cherish wife
    • Women are to respect their husbands
      • This hearkens back to verses 22-24
      • Wives lose respect for husbands when they do not live up to their relational expectations
      • Titus 2:3 must be taught affection for husband
    • Colossians 3:12-25 only commandment live is blessed of God

Key Verse:  Colossians 3:12-25 [New King James Version]

12 Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; 13 bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do. 14 But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection. 15 And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful. 16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. 17 And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.

18 Wives, submit to your own husbands, as is fitting in the Lord.

19 Husbands, love your wives and do not be bitter toward them.

20 Children, obey your parents in all things, for this is well pleasing to the Lord.

21 Fathers, do not provoke your children, lest they become discouraged.

22 Bondservants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh, not with eyeservice, as men-pleasers, but in sincerity of heart, fearing God. 23 And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men, 24 knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ. 25 But he who does wrong will be repaid for what he has done, and there is no partiality.
